Though Arsenal have previously offered contract extensions to injured players as an incentive, such as Santi Cazorla, the Gunners will not do the same for Welbeck, The Times report. This means Welbeck will leave Arsenal when his deal expires on June 30 to become a free agent, five years after joining the north London club from Manchester United. Unai Emery is happy to let Welbeck depart the Emirates for nothing to free up the wage budget for new signings, while he also plans to incorporate younger players like Reiss Nelson into Arsenal’s first-team squad moving forward.
