Rangers transfer news: How Steven Gerrards men could look at the end of January with Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis
Rangers are determined to go toe-to-toe with Celtic in this seasons Scottish Premiership title race.Their 1-0 victory over the Bhoys on December 29 has set up a thrilling final 17 games of the campaign. And now manager Steve Gerrard is bolstering his squad as he prepares for the battle ahead.Steven Gerrard celebrates with James Tavernier.7

Jermain Defoe is set to be the first man through the door, with an 18-month loan deal agreed. The 36-year-old has barely featured for Bournemouth in the Premier League this term, playing a total of 22 minutes across four substitute appearances. Its stark contrast to the 24 appearances (11 starts) he made last term but these performances only yielded four goals and one assist. It wasnt too long ago Defoe was prolific though as he netted 30 Premier League strikes for Sunderland between 2015-2017.Defoe in action for Bournemouth where his playing time has been limited.7

Defoe will likely just be experienced back up for top target man Alfredo Morelos, who has hit 12 goals this league campaign. The Colombian, signed from Finnish club HJK Helsinki in 2017, though does have a temperament issue which has seen him sent off once this season, and is wanted by a number of European clubs. If he does miss games at any point, Defoe will be the automatic starter and Gerrard will at least have faith the forward can put the ball in the back of the net.Morelos has been on fire for Rangers this season7

If Rangers get themselves into a sticky situations, the move will also allow the Liverpool legend the option to have two top class strikers on the pitch at the same time, doubling his goal threat.Gerrard has been forced into the move following Umar Sadiqs failed loan deal, which ended after just four appearances, and Kyle Lafferty only being able to net three times in 15 appearances, although nine have been from the bench.Steven Davis is scheduled to be the next man through the door at Ibrox and former Ger Lee McCulloch reckons he will provide the creativity needed to allow the club to step up a gear.“I think he’ll come in and strengthen the centre midfield area,” he said.“That’s the area that’s been highlighted by some of the critics, as there’s been no creative spark there. So I think with his ability, he’ll certainly enhance the squad.”Steven Davis shoots for Southampton this season.7

His previous spell at Rangers, between 2008 and 2012 will no doubt make his transition easier and he will command plenty of respect to.Davis won eight trophies during his time in Glasgow, winning three league titles, two Scottish Cups, three Scottish League Cups and helped them to the final on the UEFA Cup in 2008, where Zenit St Petersburg beat them.Davis celebrates scoring during his successful spell with Rangers earlier in his career.7

Davis role in the midfield seems fairly clear and its hoped his experience will bring the best out of a young Rangers midfield. But how could the Gers look as they attempt to fight Celtic all the way in the title race?talkSPORT.com have assessed the possibilities to create Rangers potential starting line-up at the end of January, which you can see below… Is this a potential XI for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard with Jermain Defoe and Steven Davis.7

Should Gerrard opt to squeeze both signings in to his current side, we would see the Gers in a very attacking 4-4-2 formation with Defoe alongside Morelos and Davis paired with Ryan Jack.Realistically, though, we’re not likely to see this too much, if at all. Only perhaps in emergency circumstances when Gerrard is attempting to win games they have gone behind in or are drawing. We feel Defoe, for the time being, will merely been a different option to Morelos, while Davis will play in a three-man midfield with Jack and Ross McCrorie, adding experience and creativity for whoever the forward is.The most likely Rangers line-up from the end of January?7

Whichever way we’re set for a fun title race north of the border and Gerrard is ready to go head on with Brendan Rodgers by signing two experienced stars.
