Jamie Redknapp believes David De Gea will sign a new long-term contract at Manchester United.First-team duo Ashley Young and Phil Jones put pen-to-paper on new deals at Old Trafford earlier this month, while Anthony Martial, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay also penned extensions earlier this season.3

And the former Tottenham and Liverpool midfielder thinks it won’t be too long before De Gea’s future is resolved, with Marcus Rashford and Ander Herrera also in talks over extending their respective deals.He told talkSPORT: “I wouldn’t be surprised whatsoever if David De Gea signed a new deal.“He seems really happy at United, so I think they’ll get that one over the line.“There are a few others like [Marcus] Rashford who will probably sign extensions too.”Such is the renewed optimism around the United squad, Redknapp doesn’t see many players moving on in the summer – a situation he didn’t foresee just a matter of months ago.3

He added: “There will probably be as many as 12 or 13 players in that Manchester United squad who wanted to leave when [Jose] Mourinho was there.“They didn’t want to be at the club. It’s as simple as that. That isn’t the case now.”Redknapp feels Solskjaer is in pole position to land the manager’s job, but says the true measure of his capability will come when he has to bring new players into the club.“If they got in the top four four it would be incredibly hard not to give him the job,” he said.“United certainly still need to sign a few players to improve the squad, though.“They need to find the next Nemanja Vidic. You only need to look at Liverpool to see the impact Virgil van Dijk has been made at Liverpool.“He’s turned them into serious title contenders.3

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in pole position to land the United job on a permanent basis

“The pressure on Solskjaer will come when he has to go and sign players. Ferguson wasn’t just a great manager, he was brilliant when it came to recruitment too.“He identified the right type of player who more times than not was a big success for Manchester United football club.“United’s signings of late haven’t been great at all.
