Premier League clubs agree in principle to introduce VAR from 2019/20 season
Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to the introduction of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) from next season.At a shareholders’ meeting on Thursday, clubs were provided with an update on this season’s VAR trials, whilethe system’s use in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup as well as other major leagues was discussed.1

VAR was used in the World Cup and in the Carabao Cup last season

A formal request will now be made to both lawmakers the International Football Association Board and FIFA, the world governing body.A statement from the Premier League said its testing programme would continue for the rest of the season, “with a continued emphasis on those Saturday afternoons which have several matches being played concurrently”.How VAR decisions are communicated to fans in the stadium is to also be addressed, with the development of a “clear protocol” to be established.In April of this year, Premier League clubs voted againstthe introduction of VAR from 2018-19 following several high profile controversies during trials of the technology in domestic cup competitions. Clubs instead agreed to ‘continue advanced testing’ of VAR, with a decision now being reached it would appear.VAR technology was used at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia and, following some initial teething problems, it was generally viewed to have been a success.The German Bundesliga and Serie A in Italy both already have VAR, while UEFA is set to bring it in for the Champions League from 2019/2020.Southampton striker Charlie Austin hit out at the lack of VAR in the Premier League only last weekend after seeing a goal controversially ruled out during the 1-1 draw against Southampton.“We go on about VAR this, VAR that – help the officials out, clearly they need help,” Austin said in a heated post-match TV interview.“We play in the Premier League, the best league in the world, the most-watched league in the world, give them all the help they need because clearly they cost us two points today. It’s a joke.”
