Jurgen Klopp has defended his decision to make nine changes to Liverpool’s starting line-up for their FA Cup third round clash at Wolves – which they ended up losing. The Reds were beaten 2-1 at Molineux to be dumped out the world’s oldest cup competition, and make it back-to-back defeats after their Premier League loss to Manchester City last week.Klopp opted to rest a number of Liverpool’s regular starters – Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah were all among the substitutes – and he handed debuts to Curtis Jones and Rafael Camacho.1
Jurgen Klopp irritated by talkSPORT’s Moose asking if Liverpool need another centre-back
Klopp has since been accused of disrespecting the FA Cup by refusing to name his strongest team, but the German insists he was forced into most of his changes. He said: “I’m not sure what you all would have said if our centre-half situation (from the start) was Fabinho and Ki-Jana, probably a few smart people would have told me I don’t respect the competition.“It doesn’t make sense to bring a 16-year-old boy from the start but he came on and did well.“I changed a lot because we have to, not because I wanted to. “After the City game we had immediately a few players who were ill with a sore throat. Pretty much all the players who weren’t here today had little problems.“Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson were in our plans. Dejan was not in our plans, he was only supposed to be on the bench.
Klopp's dreadful FA Cup record
Klopp's record in the FA Cup has come under scrutiny following another early exit this season. Since taking charge of Liverpool in 2015/16, Klopp has never guided Liverpool further than the fourth round- 2015/16: Defeated Exeter in a third round replay before being knocked out in round four by West Ham
- 2016/17: Defeated Plymouth in a third round replay before being knocked out in round four by Wolves
- 2017/18: Defeated Everton in third round before being knocked out by West Brom in fourth round
- 2018/19: Knocked out in third round with 2-1 defeat at Wolves
Tottenham have stepped up their efforts to sign Tanguy Ndombele by offering Lyon £60million. Mauricio Pochettino wants the midfielder and the club will prioritise him before pursuing other deals, though they face competition from Juventus.
